The rapid development of artificial intelligence allows anyone in the digital environment to be imitated with frightening accuracy. Deepfakes, or “deepfakes”, are fabricated digital content in which a person’s appearance, most often a voice or face, has been imitated or replaced using artificial intelligence. In the Netherlands, there are increasingly frequent cases of deepfakes being used to distribute illegal pornographic videos and images, even photos of Princess Amalia of the Netherlands. Bills are being prepared in the Netherlands and Denmark that would strengthen copyright on appearance, but they could pave the way for the sale of voices or appearances for money.
